A tragic railway accident in the southern state of Oaxaca has resulted in the deaths of at least 13 people, an incident expected to reignite critical opposition regarding the speed and management of the country's flagship government projects.
The disaster happened on the Interoceanic Train, a route constructed to join the Atlantic Ocean and Pacific across the slenderest section of the Isthmus of Tehuantepec. This initiative was created to provide an alternative rail cargo route to the Panama Canal, with the goal of spurring commercial progress in the area.
“We are going to rigorously clarify the cause of this incident,” stated the national leader.
The official announced that, of the around 250 people on board, another 98 were injured, with five of those in grave condition. The leader added plans to visit Oaxaca to meet those affected.
Major Initiative of Former Government
The Interoceanic Train was a cornerstone infrastructure project of the previous administration, whose term concluded the previous year. This venture was a hallmark of his leadership's developmental agenda for the southern region.
Another ambitious rail project from that time, a tourist and cargo loop around the Yucatán Peninsula, was also central to the comprehensive effort to revitalize the economy of a comparatively less developed part of the country.
Project Execution and Safety Concerns
The construction of both railway systems was supervised by the army, marking a notable increase of its responsibilities in national projects. They were built at an fast-tracked pace, beating expectations to be partially opened before the end of that government.
However, this accelerated timeline had simultaneously sparked significant concerns over construction quality.
- Sunday's accident was the third occurrence on the Interoceanic Train this year.
- This involves an previous accident this month when a train struck a truck at a crossing.
- The other major rail project has also had several non-lethal derailments.
Calls for Investigation and Halt
In the wake of the disaster, the head of a primary political opposition urged an immediate pause in the construction and operation of all similar projects.
This stoppage was proposed until the completion of a thorough safety audit. The party stated that the situation "requires immediate answers."
In response, the head of state maintained that the train had been running in total adherence to all operational standards. Assurances were given that the government would remain "diligent" in both the construction and operation of these national projects.
