Users Coming Off Weight-Loss Injections Regain Weight at a Quadrupled Rate Compared to Dieters

Weight management often requires long-term strategies.

A recent study indicates that patients who stop using blockbuster GLP-1 drugs like Mounjaro or Wegovy may regain shed pounds far faster than those who halt traditional diet and exercise programs.

Findings released in a prominent medical journal shows that while obese individuals frequently drop about a fifth of their total mass while on the medication, the mass comes back at an average rate of 0.8 kg per month once they quit.

"Individuals using such treatments must be cognizant of the danger of rapid weight regain when the medication is stopped," warns researcher Dr. Susan Jebb.

Such speed of regain implies a return to pre-treatment weight in about one and a half years.

Analyzing Approaches

The study, which looked at 37 of trials involving over 9,000 of patients, compared the effects of these new drugs with older methods.

Researchers point out that people who shed pounds through dieting generally have a less rapid weight regain—perhaps 0.1 kg a month—post-intervention.

The Reason for the Quick Rebound

Doctors believe the way of the drugs accounts for the heightened rebound.

GLP-1 drugs mimic a natural hormone called glucagon-like peptide-1, which helps regulate appetite.

"Artificially providing the hormone concentrations far above than normal might result in the system to produce less of its endogenous GLP-1, and may also diminish sensitivity to its actions," said Dr. Adam Collins, a nutrition specialist.

"Withdrawal of this medication leads to appetite is no longer kept in check, making overeating a significant risk."

A Lifelong Condition?

The NHS advise the injections for people with weight-linked health risks, alongside prescribed lifestyle changes.

Professionals say that, due to the likelihood of relapse, the treatment might need to be life-long.

This opinion is echoed by drug manufacturers, who note that the findings "highlight the persistent character of obesity," similar to managing conditions like high blood pressure.

Patient Testimonies

Users who have come off the medication explain a powerful resurgence of hunger.

"I experienced a switch that goes on and I was suddenly ravenous," said one woman.

This challenge is exacerbated if patients have not developed lasting lifestyle or habit modifications during treatment.

Growing Adoption

Recent estimates suggest that millions of adults in the UK have used weight-loss jabs in the past year, with interest being substantial.

  • Adoption is higher among females compared to men.
  • The middle-aged demographic shows the highest usage rates.
  • Many obtain the drugs through private healthcare rather than public health services.

Ultimately, clinicians stress that while GLP-1 drugs are powerful agents for weight loss, they are not a magic solution and maintained weight loss hinges on ongoing lifestyle changes.
